The Yorkshire Wolds Way is
a 79 mile long distance trail which runs from Hessle (near Hull) through the
picturesque countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds to finish at Filey Brigg. Here
the walk shares the same stone marker as the Cleveland way (110 miles)
start/finish and the two can be merged into a 189 mile trip if desired.
The YWW passes through
some delightful countryside with its own unique stone so the buildings have a
different look to the limestone /grit stone areas of the dales further to the
West. The walk itself is not particularly strenuous in terms of total ascent but
it does have quite a few sections of road and track which can be hard on the
feet. However, it is well signed all the way so navigation is not a problem.
Camp sites are a bit sparse (resulting in an 18 mile leg for us one day) but
there is ample B&B accommodation and a useful guide can be downloaded from the
YWW website to help with accommodation choice and route planning.
Public transport is
available to Hessle for those wishing to use it and the area is well served by
buses and trains. We chose to leave the car at Filey Brigg and travel from Filey
to Hessle (change at Hull) by train on the morning of the 16th thus
taking 6 days to walk back to the car. There are some interesting historical
features and colourful characters along the way (details of which can be found
in the following daily accounts).
