6 walkers set out from Holme Chapel, past The Ram Inn following the route to Deer Play. Most ascents to Thieveley Pike tend to take the direct approach, this walk is less demanding and takes a more circuitous route. We stopped at Easden Clough Wood for shelter and coffee. Out onto Deerplay Moor and the summit trig on Thievely Pike. We took a slight descent to take shelter and have a fairly dry lunch break. After lunch we took the narrow trod across a wild Heald Moor, descending eventually into the valley and a brief passing into Yorkshire at the edge of Portsmouth. The weather caused us to eliminate the original ascent onto Black Scout. We took a more direct steeper rise onto the ridge and the looming wind farm of Coal Clough. We braved the final hail along the ridge to finally descend the ensuing pasture through a belt of woodland and down onto the A646, home to the lay-by starting point. |
