Mist and strong winds on the higher fell tops. Poor visibility in
the morning, improving in the afternoon. |

Six walkers joined the leader for this
walk in the Northern Fells. Starting at 980 feet above sea level, we
followed the Skiddaw path for a while before turning east for
Lonscale Fell. After visiting the pike, we retraced our steps and
continued on to Skiddaw Little Man, where we watched the farmer
rounding up his flock for a time. Carrying on to Skiddaw we were
enveloped in mist and buffeted by the strong winds blowing across
the summit. It was a welcome relief to begin the descent to
Bakestall, where we were sheltered somewhat from the wind, and
gradually emerged from the mist. On reaching Whitewater Dash, we
crossed the stream, and followed the fence to the summit of Great
Calva. One of Great Calva's principal assets, besides the view, is
the sturdy stone shelter which we managed to squeeze into for lunch.
Following lunch we descended to Skiddaw House where we joined the
Cumbria Way and back to the cars. |
