Walk: Top of Emmetts, Tarnbrook and Marshaw
Start Point: Stoops Bridge, Abbeystead Grid Reference: SD 563 543
Distance: 7 miles Ascent: 900 feet
Time: 5 hours    
Weather: Very cold but mainly dry with an odd hail shower
Comments: Fortunately snow that fell in the area a few days earlier had, in the main melted or been washed away by rain. Parking by the Tarnbrook Wyre river, which was in full spate, it was hoped that the level would not rise and flood the parking area. Twenty one people took part in the walk along the upper loop of the Wyre Way. The are two river Wyre's there being the Tarnbrook Wyre to the north and the Marshaw Wyre which flows through part of the Trough of Bowland. The rivers join at Abbeystead. Crossing the Marshaw Wyre the route followed part of the Wyre Way before the leader surprised the group and re crossed the Marshaw Wyre to head north to 'Top of Emmetts'. Then dropping down towards Tarnbrook the party crossed Tarnbrook Wyre to enter the hamlet of Tarnbrook. Passing through Tarnbrook the route then passed through Gilberton before rising to Hind Hill. Here the group had fun in the remains of a snow drift before descending to Tower Lodge next to the Marshaw Wyre. After lunch the group followed the Wyre Way downstream by the Marshaw Wyre to Abbeystead Hall and Stoops Bridge. Another enjoyable walk.
