Eight Ramblers made the journey to the
village of Dent traversing a variety of interesting single track
routes which allow limited access to this quaint Dales village of
narrow cobbled lanes and ale houses.
The weather was much better than expected which was a bonus and set
the scene for a good day out in the Dales. The walk took the group
back through the village to Church Bridge where we should have
joined the Dales way , leader missed a footpath but fortunately a
parallel footpath along the banks of Keld put us back on course. We
left the Dales way at Mill Bridge and followed a short road walk to
Dyke hall Lane where we picked up the Craven Way which ascended the
shoulder of Whernside, a good track and footpath giving views down
into the Dentdale valley . A short stop for tea at Wold End and then
on down the Craven Way until we met the footpath leading to
Whernside A steady climb saw the group arrive at the top for lunch
and to join Phil who had elected to take an alternative route to
explore Whernside Tarns. After lunch and the obligatory Group Shot
by the trig point we descended the west side of Whernside and made
our way back towards Dent on Green Lane a track which started with
great promise but quickly showed the ravages of time, weather, 4X4
and motor cycle traffic. |
